Fakhrul hopes interim govt will hold election by February

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed hope that the interim government will hold a free and fair national election by February next year, paving the way for the country to move in the right direction.

He made the statement while speaking to reporters after visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet on Monday morning. Later, he also visited the shrine of Hazrat Shah Paran (RA).


Mirza Fakhrul arrived in Sylhet at 9:25am by a Biman flight to Osmani International Airport. At around 10am, he offered prayers at the shrines.

The BNP delegation is visiting Sylhet at the invitation of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser and UK BNP President MA Malik.

As part of the day's programs, the central leaders of BNP will attend a special prayer session at Sunrise Community Centre in the Pathantula area of Sylhet city, seeking Khaleda Zia’s quick recovery.

Later, at 2pm, a special event will be held at Hotel Star Pacific near Dargah Gate, organized by Sylhet District BNP, to honour the families of those killed during the July-August 2024 anti-government movement.

Fakhrul will attend the program as the chief guest.

BNP secretary general accompanied by party Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, and Iqbal Mahmud Tuku; Executive Committee member and Dhaka District General Secretary Advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury; Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid; and Joint Secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, among others.

Upon his arrival at Sylhet Airport, Fakhrul was received by BNP Central Organizing Secretary GK Gaus, Sylhet District BNP President Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, Acting President of Sylhet City BNP Rezaul Hasan Kaos Ludi.

District BNP President Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury confirmed that the prayer session at Sunrise Community Centre would be held for Khaleda Zia’s recovery.

He added: “The nation will never forget the brave young souls who were martyred in the fight to restore democracy, defying the oppressive regime’s threats. Today’s program is a token of our respect to those families.”
