The interim government has cancelled the observance of August 8 as ‘New Bangladesh Day’. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Advisory Council on Sunday (June 29).
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared the information on his verified Facebook page. He wrote that the Advisory Council has decided to observe July 16 as Martyrs’ Day and August 5 as Uprising Day. There will be no special observance for August 8.
Earlier, following the fall of the government through a student-popular uprising last Wednesday, the newly formed interim government led by Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus declared August 8 as ‘New Bangladesh Day’.
A circular had instructed all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to observe the day with due significance every year. It was classified under category ‘B’ in the Cabinet Division’s list of national and international observance days.
